Shopify alternative
NexCart vs Shopify: which ecommerce website builder fits you?
Shopify is the default for a reason. NexCart is a simpler Shopify alternative if you want your own online store without a monthly platform bill or an extra transaction fee on top of card processing. This page is for the decision, not a scoreboard.
Who NexCart is for
NexCart is an online store builder for a merchant who wants their own store — products, checkout, orders, payments, and shipping — without hiring someone to assemble plugins. Starter is free. You publish on a NexCart subdomain first, then attach a custom domain when the catalog is real.
It fits independent brands, specialty catalogs, and operators who will live in one dashboard. It does not try to be a retail POS, a multi-vendor marketplace, or a replacement for a Shopify Plus implementation team.
Who Shopify is for
Shopify is the default hosted commerce platform for a reason: a full online store, a large theme and app market, Shopify Payments, and a clear path from a first shop to Shopify Plus. Agencies know it. Hiring is easier. Playbooks for international selling, subscriptions, and retail are documented because thousands of stores already run them.
If you already sell in person, need a specific app, or expect to hand the store to a Shopify specialist, that ecosystem is the product. The subscription is the cost of that default.
Quick comparison
| Decision | NexCart | Shopify |
|---|---|---|
| Best fit | Independent brands that want a full online store without assembling apps | Teams that want the largest ecosystem, POS, and a proven scale path |
| Platform subscription | Starter is $0 / month | Basic from $39 / month ($29 / month billed yearly) |
| Extra platform fee on card sales | None on Starter — you pay the processor you connect | None with Shopify Payments; 2% extra on Basic if you use another gateway |
| Checkout & catalog | Built in | Built in |
| Apps & extensions | Core commerce is in the product; third-party catalog is small | Large App Store — the main reason many merchants stay |
| Retail / POS | Not a POS product today | POS Lite included; POS Pro is a paid add-on |
| Customization ceiling | Themes and homepage sections from the dashboard | Theme store, Liquid, and headless options such as Hydrogen |
Pricing comparison
NexCart Starter is $0 per month and does not add a platform transaction fee. When a customer pays by card, you pay Stripe, PayPal, Razorpay, or whichever processor you connect — their rate, not a second NexCart percentage.
Shopify’s public US pricing as of August 2026, from shopify.com/pricing: Basic $39 / month ($29 / month billed yearly), Grow $105 / month ($79 yearly), Advanced $399 / month ($299 yearly), Plus from $2,300 / month. Online card rates with Shopify Payments start at 2.9% + 30¢ on Basic and fall on higher plans. If you use a third-party gateway instead of Shopify Payments, Shopify adds 2% on Basic, 1% on Grow, 0.6% on Advanced, and 0.2% on Plus.
Those Shopify figures are list prices and change. Always confirm on Shopify’s site for your country before you model cost. Themes, POS Pro, and many apps are extra on Shopify. NexCart templates are included on Starter.
Store setup
On NexCart you create an account, pick a template, add products, connect payments, set shipping, and publish. The setup checklist is the product: business info, first SKU, theme, tax, domain.
Shopify setup is also fast for a first store. The difference shows up after publish. Many Shopify stores then install apps for reviews, upsells, email, or shipping rules. That is normal on Shopify and is why the App Store exists. NexCart keeps those jobs in the dashboard so a new store is not an app-shopping trip. If you already know which five Shopify apps you will install on day one, you are not the NexCart customer.
Customization
NexCart customization is dashboard-first: colors, type, homepage sections, and industry templates. That is enough for a credible catalog. It is not Liquid, and it is not a headless storefront you hand to a front-end team.
Shopify’s ceiling is higher. The theme store, Liquid themes, and options such as Hydrogen exist because brands outgrow a section-based homepage. If your brief is a fully custom storefront or a design system shared with a marketing site, Shopify (or a custom stack) is the honest match.
Payments
Both platforms take paid orders. Shopify Payments is Shopify’s own processor: no extra Shopify gateway fee, card rates that improve on higher plans, and a tight fit with Shopify POS. Using Stripe or PayPal on Shopify instead is allowed — and that is when the extra percentage applies.
NexCart does not run its own card network. You enable the provider your market already uses. There is no NexCart penalty for choosing Stripe over someone else. Cash on delivery can be enabled where that is how customers pay. The tradeoff: you do not get Shopify Payments’ in-house rates, payouts, or POS pairing.
Apps and integrations
This is Shopify’s clearest advantage. The App Store covers subscriptions, wholesale, loyalty programs, page builders, and category-specific tools that NexCart does not attempt to match one-for-one. An ecosystem that large also means more update surface and more monthly app bills — that is the other side of the same fact.
NexCart ships reviews, discounts, automations, SEO, and a store blog in the product. Third-party integrations exist for payments, shipping providers, and tracking — not a general app store. If a named Shopify app is load-bearing, do not migrate on price alone.
Performance
We will not claim NexCart is faster than Shopify. Shopify has spent years on global infrastructure, checkout capacity, and theme performance guidance. That maturity matters at high volume.
NexCart storefronts are server-rendered. The marketing site and merchant stores share a Next.js codebase. For a typical catalog, that is a solid default. It is not a published Core Web Vitals bake-off. If you have strict performance SLOs or a headless frontend team, measure both — do not take a vendor’s word.
When Shopify is the better choice
Choose Shopify if any of these are true:
- You sell in person and need POS, not just an online cart.
- You depend on Shopify apps, Flow, or a Plus-level checkout you already run.
- Your agency, freelancer, or next hire is already a Shopify specialist.
- You need a documented path to high-volume international selling and a large services market around the platform.
- Saving the monthly subscription would cost you features you actually use.
Switching away from a working Shopify store to “pay less” is usually more expensive than the subscription. Migration cost is real.
When NexCart is the better choice
Choose NexCart if you want a professional online store, you do not need POS or a large app stack, and you would rather not pay a platform subscription before the first order. Built-in catalog, checkout, and orders matter more to you than an app marketplace.
It is also the better trial: start free, publish a real catalog, and keep Shopify in mind if you later outgrow the simpler surface. NexCart should win on fit, not on a claim that Shopify is the wrong tool for everyone.
Frequently asked questions
Is NexCart a Shopify alternative?+−
Yes, if what you need is an online store with products, checkout, orders, and shipping. It is not a replacement for Shopify Plus, Shopify POS, or a large app stack. The online store builder guide covers the category; this page is the Shopify decision. Read “when Shopify is better” before you switch.
Is NexCart cheaper than Shopify?+−
On Starter, NexCart has no monthly platform fee and no extra NexCart cut on card sales. Shopify charges a subscription on every full online-store plan and an extra percentage if you use a third-party gateway instead of Shopify Payments. Card processors still charge both platforms. Confirm current Shopify rates on shopify.com/pricing — they change.
Can I migrate a Shopify catalog to NexCart?+−
You can import a catalog and rebuild the storefront on NexCart. Theme customizations, apps, and checkout scripts do not come across automatically. Budget time for payments, shipping, and redirects — not just product CSV.
Does NexCart have an app store like Shopify?+−
No. Marketing automations, SEO, discounts, and reviews ship in the product. If your store depends on a specific Shopify app that has no equivalent, Shopify is the safer choice.
Who should stay on Shopify?+−
Stay if you need POS, a large agency market, Shopify Flow / Plus checkout control, or apps you already rely on. Switching to save the monthly fee is a bad trade if those are load-bearing.
